Dermabrasion
Is Dermabrasion Right For You?
Every time you turn around, it seems, there is a new cosmetic procedure reaching a peak in popularity. Some old standards may be better for you than the newest thing right now, and dermabrasion is one of those time-tested old standards that never fail to deliver what it promises. If you have blemishes, wrinkles or acne scars that you want to disappear, then this is the procedure for you.
Want to get rid of acne scars, blemishes or fine lines? Call True MD today for an immediate appointment to explore the wonders of dermabrasion.
What is Dermabrasion?
This cosmetic procedure utilizes anesthesia or ice packs to first freeze the skin, after which our trained technicians will use a tool like a diamond wheel or wire brush to gently plane the dead skin cells away, revealing new and healthier skin below. This can be done anywhere on the body, but most patients have it done on their face alone.
Unlike microdermabrasion, where the skin is blasted with tiny crystals to cover a larger area of the top layer to be removed, our trained technicians performing these cosmetic techniques can target smaller areas, and has more finite control over the amount of skin cells that are removed, as well as how many layers are removed to achieve the full effect.
What makes A Good Candidate?
Generally, anyone in somewhat good health can be a viable candidate for this procedure, especially if they have acne scars or an uneven skin tone. If you have suffered from acne in the past, you must be completely off any prescription acne medicine prior to having the procedure done for at least eighteen months. Healed scars are much easier to remove than partially healed acne sores, so keep that in mind before electing to undergo this operation.
During your initial assessment appointment, be sure to go over any medications that you are currently taking with our trained technicians. Certain drugs, herbal supplements, and even some vitamins, can potentially interfere with anesthesia used during the procedure, influence how your blood clots and thin your blood. All of this can interfere with the healing process after the procedure is complete.
Before and After
Before undergoing the procedure, your skin must be cared for, and ointments like Retin-A applied nightly, for several days before the procedure. You should not be on any medication during this time. After the dermabrasion, for up to a month, you may have to keep sterile bandages on your skin as it heals. Dead skin will flake off, and there may be redness, but all of this fades within four weeks.
