Chemical Peels

True MD offers a number of chemical peels to smooth, clear and rejuvenate your skin, including Obagi peels, Jessner’s peels, glycolic peels and salicylic peels. All our chemical peels work in much the same way, using a safe but strong acidic solution to remove the blemished, dead outer layers of the dermis while stimulating the deep layers of the skin to increase the production of new, fresh skin. This double action of removing the old skin and producing new skin makes the tone and color of your face more even, shrinks pores and softens wrinkles, making your face look and feel younger and more vibrant. In addition to exfoliation, many of our peels add nutrients and other healthy stimulants to your skin such as retinol, hydroquinone and resorcinol, moisturizing your skin and giving it the resources to flourish and grow as it was always meant to do.

At True MD, we offer a large selection of peels because we know that it’s important to customize our treatments to the large range of skin types and sensitivities out there. It’s our pleasure to match your face with the type of peel that will do the most good with the least discomfort. To do this, we first identify the Fitzpatrick type of your skin, collating your genetic markers, your skin’s normal reaction to the sun and your recent history of sun exposure. We also gather data on allergies and pre-existing skin conditions, like Rosacea or acne, that might affect your skin’s response to a chemical peel. From this data, we can advise you on the best choices in chemical peels for your skin type and preferred result.

In general, chemical peels can be categorized as light, medium or deep. Even our light peels, though, are stronger and more effective than the ones sold over-the-counter in stores. Many of our peels use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in different concentrations depending on the desired depth of impact, including the revolutionary Obagi Blue Peel, the deepest peel offered by True MD. Such deep chemical peels used to require a hospital setting because of the danger of chemical burns, but the Obagi Blue Peel combines a high concentration of TCA with the Obagi Blue Base in a 1:4 ratio, which helps the administration of the peel and protects the skin. Unlike the light and medium peels, which can be done with no special skin preparation, patients who use the Obagi Blue Peel will have to be prescribed a series of Obagi Nu-Derm treatments to be applied at home 8-16 weeks before the actual Blue Peel. Some prescription skin care products may be required after the peel also. Though it requires this level of commitment, the Obagi Blue Peel has been proven to counteract the aging process of your skin, soften wrinkles, restore elasticity, and largely eliminate hyperpigmentation, UV sun damage and acne scarring. That’s more than can be said for most of the costly, time-consuming and ineffective treatments marketed to American consumers in the name of beauty.

After a light peel, such as a glycolic or salicylic solution, your skin may not actually flake off, but cell growth in the dermis has still been stimulated. After these peels, your face may be reddish and slightly swollen for a day or so. A TCA peel, on the other hand, will normally cause the top layers of the skin to separate and peel off within a few days, making way for the fresher, newer skin to come to light. There will usually be some swelling with these peels, and possibly some minor discomfort, which can be managed with normal or prescription pain medications. Your True MD team will explain the procedure, the side effects and the recovery, and they will be available to answer questions and provide solutions during the recovery process. Overall, most people’s skin is fully recovered and is looking better than ever within two weeks.

Though one chemical peel does visible and long-lasting good, even better results can be achieved through a series of peels, alternating chemical peels with microdermabrasion and/or a regimen of medical grade skin care products available at True MD. Scheduling successive chemical peels keeps the deep dermis working to build fresh, new skin cells and push them upwards, while also relentlessly doing away with the old and damaged layers of skin. If your skin has several layers of sun-damaged, hyperpigmented or scarred skin, it may take several peels to take it all off. Working on the same principle, microdermabrasion is like a “buff and polish” for the skin, physically removing the shreds of skin that haven’t come off by themselves after a peel, making it a great tag-team procedure to do after or between peels.

Finally, how the patient maintains their skin at home after getting a fresh start is extremely important. True MD carries TriLuma, SkinCeutical products, Obagi Nu-Derm products, Rx Systems and the Jane Iredale line of skin-sensitive make-up products. Talk to your True MD aestheticians to see which of these products would be appropriate and effective for your skin type and situation. If you have skin care and skin improvement goals, let True MD help you chart your course to more beautiful, healthy skin!
