UV Sun Damage and Age Spots

Though everyone’s skin ages naturally, our sun-loving habits speed up the process of collagen breakdown and loss of elasticity that show up as old-looking skin. Long or intense exposure to UV rays damage the deep layers of the skin, hurting the skin’s ability to recreate itself, and damages the skin’s elastin, Sunburn Belly impairing the skin’s ability to snap back into place after being stretched. This damage is present under the skin before it shows up on the surface as age spots, sun spots, wrinkles or thin and dry skin, but once the damage is done by excessive, unprotected exposure to the sun’s rays, the signs will be sure to follow.

To prevent or slow down sun damage and the skin problems it causes you should avoid sun exposure including tanning, as much as possible, staying out of the sun during the middle of the day and clothing yourself protectively. Sleeping on your back (instead of on your face or side) and avoiding prolonged or recurring facial expressions will also help keep wrinkles away. Stopping any smoking will also be a blessing for your skin and both smoking and tanning cessation have the added benefit of lowering your chances of cancer.

However, since much of the damage has probably already been done, True MD offers a variety of medically proven treatments to restore both the look and the real health of your skin. All our treatments use different means to stimulate new collagen production under the skin, healing your skin from the inside out, but our True MD physicians can help you decide which treatment would work best for your skin, budget and general preference. Our microdermabrasion and chemical peel procedures encourage collagen production by taking off the dead skin cells in the top layers of skin or epidermis, but our premier method of healing the skin is the IPL Photofacial, which uses intense pulsed light to stimulate skin growth for months after the initial treatment.

If the signs of your “sunny” past are starting to show through in sagging skin, wrinkles, sun spots and other blemishes, come talk to one of our medical professionals at True MD. We can’t stop time, but with our state-of-the-art technology, we can turn back your skin’s clock by stimulating the growth of new, fresh skin.
